Summer celebrations offering up fun and food continue across Seattle this coming weekend, August 7-9. While there are fewer events than on previous weekends, motorists should expect heavy traffic near the event sites. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) encourages residents and visitors to consider parking the car and trying other modes of travel such as cycling, taking the bus, or if feasible, walking.

East Union Street Paving on Sat, Aug 8

SDOT paving crews will work on East Union Street between Broadway and Harvard Avenue on Saturday, August 8, from 7 a.m. until no later than 3 p.m. Traffic will be restricted to one lane, assisted by traffic flaggers. The sidewalk on the south side of the street will be closed.
 
This Neighborhood Street Fund project includes realignment of the intersection, partial permanent closure of East Union Street, installation of six curb ramps, additional crosswalk and bike lane markings, and pedestrian lighting.

Weekend Ahead Packs in Hydro Races, Festivals, Parades and More

SEATTLE – The coming weekend, Friday through Sunday, July 31 – August 2, offers up a wide variety of entertainment including three parades, festivals, hydroplane races and fireworks. Motorists should count on heavy traffic surrounding event sites and on parking at a distance and walking to the activities. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) encourages event-goers to consider other modes of travel such as walking, cycling or taking the bus.

The Chevrolet (Hydroplane) Cup at Seafair and KeyBank Air Show presented by Boeing (including concert and fireworks) will make it easier for participants to leave the car at home by providing secure bike corrals on site and shuttle buses from the Boeing lot in Renton and the Eastgate Park and Ride to the Genessee Park entrance gate.  There will also be a shuttle from the Link Rail Othello Station at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Othello Street or people can walk the mile to the park from the Link Rail Columbia City Station at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Edmunds Street.  Information on Seafair shuttles is available at www.seafair.com/events/hydro/getthere.asp . Please note that street closures for some events begin today, Thursday, July 30.

Light Rail Launch + Sounders Match+ Seafair Events = Traffic

SEATTLE –The coming weekend is chock-full of Seafair and summer activities taking place throughout Seattle from Thursday afternoon through Sunday, evening, July 16 – 19.   There are many events celebrating Seattle’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity.  In addition, crowds of 50,000 to 70,000 people are expected to turn out for the launch of the newly completed Tukwila to Seattle Sound Transit Light Rail, the Seattle Sounders match against England’s Chelsea Football Club, and the Bite of Seattle.

Motorists should expect to encounter heavy traffic around event sites and plan to park at a distance and walk.  Instead of driving alone, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) encourages event-goers to consider alternate modes of travel such as walking, cycling, carpooling, or taking the bus – by doing so, they’ll avoid frustration, save themselves money, and reduce their carbon footprint!

Swim, bike and run participants gather along Lake Washington Boulevard at Seward and Ferdinand Park. The course heads north on Lake Washington Boulevard and Lakeside, west on S Day Street, up the bike path to the I-90 express lanes, across the bridge and u-turn back across the bridge and bike path to south on 36th Avenue S and returns to  Seward Park for a swim in Lake Washington.

Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP):  Assembles beginning at 4:00 a.m.

Waves of 500-900 cyclists will leave every ten minutes with the first group departing at 4:45 a.m. and the last leaving at 7:30 a.m. They will assemble at the University of Washington E-1 N parking lot on Montlake Boulevard adjacent to Husky Stadium. Police will escort the cyclists out of the parking lot and hold traffic if necessary. Riders head south on Montlake to Pacific Place, west on Pacific to the University Bridge, south on Fuhrman Avenue and Boyer Avenue to Lake Washington Boulevard, south on Lake Washington to Renton.

 

Queen Anne Fun Run/Walk:  7 a.m. – 11 a.m.

The 3.3 mile run along Queen Anne Blvd begins at 5th Avenue W and W Halladay Street and ends at Coe Elementary School on Seventh Avenue W and W Smith Street.

Fourth of July Weekend Brings Fun and Traffic Delays

SEATTLE – The coming holiday weekend gets underway on Friday, July 3, with a Green Day concert and midnight race, Firecracker 5000, both likely to impact traffic late in the evening around the Seattle Center.  On Saturday, two major events drawing enormous crowds will take place on opposite ends of Lake Union – the Wooden Boat Festival on the south end and the Chase Fourth of July Fireworks at the north end. In addition, there are many other activities taking place elsewhere in the city that promise attendance in the thousands.  The Seattle Department of Transportation suggests that motorists should plan on delays, parking at a distance and walking to the events, or consider using alternate modes of travel – bus, bike or, if feasible, walk.

Rolling slowdowns with Seattle Police escort.  Parade starts at Sunset Avenue SW and 44th Avenue SW, goes south on Sunset to SW Atlantic Street,  east on Atlantic to Palm Avenue SW, north on Palm into Hamilton Viewpoint Park.

 

Chase Family Fourth:  12 Noon – 11 p.m. (traffic delays possibly up to midnight)

Lake Union-Gas Works Park

From 12 noon to 6 p.m., Seattle Police will set up a perimeter restricting traffic to “local access only” between Sunnyside Avenue N on the east, Interlake Avenue N on the west, N 39th Street on the north and N Northlake Way/GasWorks Park on the south. 

From 6 p.m. 11:30 p.m., the restricted traffic access perimeter will be enlarged to I-5 on the east, Stone Way N on the west, N 40th Street on the north and N Northlake Way/ Lake Union/Gas Works Park on the south.

Boat traffic is expected to increase at least 30 percent on the Lake Union for the event. Boaters coming into Lake Union need to pass through the Lake Washington Ship Canal bridges by 9 p.m.  After the fireworks, the Fremont Bridge will not re-open to marine traffic until 12:30 a.m. July 5, the Ballard and University Bridge will not re-open for marine traffic until 1:30 a.m. July 5.

Big Summer Solstice Weekend Ahead, June 19-21

This Sunday, June 21, is the first day of summer, otherwise known as the Summer Solstice. In celebration of the beginning of summer, there is a wide range of events taking place across the city. The Fremont business district will be packed this weekend with the annual Fremont Summer Solstice Parade, Festival and Street Fair.  Also crowds in the thousands are expected to turn out for the LiveStrong Challenge taking place in and around the Seattle Center, the All Nations Cup Parade through downtown, and the Seattle Mariners games at Safeco Field.

The Seattle Department of Transportation reminds motorists to plan for possible delays associated with these events and encourages everyone to leave the car at home and consider an alternate mode of travel – ride a bike, take the bus, or if feasible, walk.
