Expect periodic lane closures as SDOT restripes and updates road signs and signals.
In conjunction with the Yesler Bridge Rehabilitation Project, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will extend the existing Fifth Ave transit contraflow lane by two blocks between Terrace and S Washington streets (please follow link for map – green arrow on the map).
Over the weekend of February 12, crews will remove existing road paint on 5th Ave. In the following two weeks, crews will:
- Adjust traffic signs and signals and paint new road markings*
- Remove parking on the east side of 5th Ave between S Washington and Terrace streets
This work is weather dependent and will occur sometime in the next two weeks. As work occurs, flaggers will safely direct cars, pedestrians, and cyclists during periodic lane closures.
The existing Fifth Avenue transit contraflow lane allows buses and cyclists to move north on Fifth Avenue, a one-way southbound street. By adding this two-block extension, SDOT will create a continuous transit-only contraflow lane from Seattle Blvd South to the I-5 HOV access lanes at Fifth Avenue and Cherry Street.
The expanded contraflow lane will allow buses to move people more efficiently northbound on Fifth Avenue and will help Seattle improve transit speed and reliability throughout downtown. It will also support transit detours during the Yesler Bridge Rehabilitation construction, planned to begin this spring, and serve as a shared use lane for bikes.
