The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will close two north-south streets at their intersections with South Jackson Street on Saturday, March 29. Fifth Avenue South will be closed on both sides of South Jackson Street from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 12th Avenue South will be closed on both sides of South Jackson Street from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The closures are for asphalt paving work associated with the First Hill Streetcar Project. The work requires fair weather and will be rescheduled if the forecast is not favorable.
Eastbound and Westbound traffic will be permitted through these intersections but no turns will be allowed from South Jackson Street to northbound or southbound 12th Avenue South or Fifth Avenue South during these times. Police officers and traffic flaggers will be present to ensure access to businesses and residences in the area.
The following detours will be provided the 12th and Jackson closure:
Northbound through traffic on 12th Avenue South will be directed:
- From 15th Avenue South and South College Street travel east on South College Street to Rainier Avenue South
- Then north on Rainier Avenue South and Boren Avenue to 12th Avenue South
Southbound through traffic on 12th Avenue South will be directed:
- Southeast on Boren Avenue South to Rainier Avenue South
- South on Rainier Avenue South to South College Street
- West on South College Street to 15th Avenue South
- North on 15th Avenue South to return to 12th Avenue South
The following detours will be provided for the Fifth and Jackson closure:
Northbound Fifth Avenue South to South Jackson Street traffic will be directed:
- East on South King Street to Sixth Avenue South
- North on Sixth Avenue South to South Jackson Street
Eastbound South Jackson Street to southbound Fifth Avenue South will be directed:
- East on South Jackson Street to Sixth Avenue South
- South on Sixth Avenue South to South King Street
- West on South King Street to Fifth Avenue South
Southbound through traffic on Fifth Avenue South will be directed:
- East at South Main Street to Sixth Avenue South
- South on Sixth Avenue south to South King Street
- West on South King Street to Fifth Avenue South
When complete, the First Hill Streetcar Line will have ten stations along a two and one-half mile route from South Jackson Street and Occidental Avenue South to Broadway and Denny Way. The City of Seattle is developing the First Hill Streetcar in partnership with Sound Transit, with funding provided through the 2008 voter approved Sound Transit 2 (ST2) transit expansion plan.
