Washington State Department of Transportation
**UPDATE from WSDOT at 1 p.m. March 18, 2014: The closure scheduled for Tuesday, March 18 is canceled.**
March 17, 2014
Drivers who use State Route 99 in Seattle should be prepared for overnight closures in both directions between downtown and the West Seattle Bridge.
Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation plan to close northbound and southbound SR 99 between South Atlantic Street and the West Seattle Bridge nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, March 17 to the morning of Thursday, March 20. The highway will be closed between Atlantic Street to just south of the West Seattle Bridge. The West Seattle Bridge ramp to northbound SR 99 will also be closed.
During the closures, crews will complete the striping and realign traffic on the new Spokane Street overcrossing. Work started last week, but heavy rain on several nights prevented them from completing the work. Additional rain this week could force additional work cancellations.
The new bridge over Spokane Street replaces an old structure built in 1959 using timber that rotted, split and crumbled over time. The new overpass is built of concrete and Geofoam blocks.
