The Seattle Department of Transportation will close two east-west streets at their intersections with Broadway from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. James Street will be closed on both sides of Broadway, and East Jefferson Street will be closed on the east side of Broadway. These closures are for asphalt paving work associated with the First Hill Streetcar project. The work requires fair weather and will be rescheduled if the forecast is not favorable.
Northbound and southbound traffic will be permitted through these intersections but no turns will be allowed from Broadway to eastbound or westbound James Street or to eastbound East Jefferson Street. Police officers and traffic flaggers will be present to ensure access to businesses and residences in the area.
The following detours will be provided:
Eastbound traffic on Jefferson Street and James Street will be directed north on Boren Avenue to Madison Street, east on Madison Street to 12th Avenue, then south on 12th Avenue to East Cherry Street or East Jefferson Street.
Westbound traffic on East Jefferson Street and East Cherry Street will be directed north on 12th Avenue to Madison Street, west on Madison Street to Boren Avenue, then south on Boren Avenue to James Street and Jefferson Street.
When complete, the First Hill Streetcar Line will have ten stations along a two and one-half mile route from South Jackson Street and Occidental Avenue South to Broadway and Denny Way. The City of Seattle is developing the First Hill Streetcar in partnership with Sound Transit, with funding provided through the 2008 voter approved Sound Transit 2 (ST2) transit expansion plan. Completion is planned for mid- 2014. For further information, visit the project website at http://www.seattlestreetcar.org.
