This past summer, the Seattle Department of Transportation began repaving North 105th Street and Northgate Way west of I-5, and now the initial phase of the project is nearing completion. On Monday, Feb. 17 (President’s Day) all lanes on North 105th Street from Greenwood Avenue North to Aurora Avenue North will be opened to traffc, weather permitting.
At some time next week, possibly as early as Feb. 17, depending on the weather, construction will shift and the eastbound travel lanes between Aurora Avenue North and Meridian Avenue North will be closed. Westbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane. This closure and lane reduction is expected to remain in place until July.
Detours after the shift:
- General purpose traffic will be detoured either north on Aurora to North 115th Street or south on Aurora to North 85th Street.
- Truck traffic will be detoured north on Aurora to North 145th Street.
- General purpose traffic heading to North Seattle Community College, Northgate Shopping Center, or other destinations in the area may also detour south on Aurora to North 90th Street, then east to Wallingford Avenue North, then turn north on Wallingford to North 92nd Street, east on 92nd , and north again along College Way North/Meridian Avenue North.
The third and final phase of paving, between Meridian Avenue North and Corliss Avenue North (the block immediately west of I-5) will be done in July and August. The width of North Northgate Way in this one block segment is sufficiently wide that both east and westbound traffic will be maintained, although it will frequently be reduced to a single lane of traffic in each direction.
The project is expected to be completed in the late summer. In addition to paving, sidewalks and curb ramps will be constructed, and new drainage infrastructure, including new stormwater detention pipes and water quality features will be installed. Finally, the project includes LED upgrades to streetlights and traffic signals, some additional street lights to benefit pedestrians, and two new dynamic message boards to provide real time travel information to motorists (to be located at North 105th Street and Ashworth Avenue North and Lake City Way Northeast and Northeast 120th Street.)
