As previously announced, the Seattle Department of transportation will be closing the intersection of East Jefferson Street and Broadway this coming weekend; however, the hours of the closure have been revised. The closure will begin at 5 a.m. on Saturday morning and will continue through the night until Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
The closure is required for overhead electrical installations associated with the First Hill Streetcar project. Police officers and flaggers will be present to ensure access to businesses and residences in the area. All crosswalks will remain open.
The following detours will be provided (see the detour map on the streetcar website):
- Northbound traffic on Broadway will be directed north-west on Boren Avenue to James Street, then east on James Street to Broadway.
- Southbound traffic on Broadway will be directed west to James Street to Boren Avenue, then southeast on Boren Avenue to Broadway.
- Eastbound traffic on Jefferson Street will be directed northwest on Boren Avenue to East James Street, east on James Street/Cherry Street to 12th Avenue, then south on 12th Avenue to East Jefferson Street.
- Westbound traffic on East Jefferson Street will be directed north on 12th Avenue to East Cherry Street, west on East Cherry Street/East James Way, to Boren Avenue, then southeast on Boren Avenue to Jefferson Street.
When complete, the First Hill Streetcar will have ten stations along a two and one-half mile route from South Jackson Street and Occidental Avenue South to Broadway and Denny Way. The City of Seattle is developing the First Hill Streetcar in partnership with Sound Transit, with funding provided through the 2008 voter approved Sound Transit 2 (ST2) transit expansion plan. Completion is planned for mid-2014. For further information, visit the project website at http://www.seattlestreetcar.org/firsthill.htm.
