Crews from the Seattle Department of Transportation periodically closed the University Bridge briefly today for brief periods while a flusher truck applied water to the bridge deck to cool it down. No flushing is planned for the evening commute today. Crews will monitor the bridge tomorrow and a flusher truck will be available if it is needed.
If flushing is needed, the sidewalks on the bridge will remain open for pedestrians and bicycles. Bicyclists and motorcyclists on the bridge are advised to use caution when thee bridge deck surface is wet.
When temperatures are elevated for multiple days, the bascule leaves of the bridge expand, narrowing the gap where the two leaves meet in the middle. If the leaves expand to the point that they touch, the bridge cannot be opened and closed for marine traffic. SDOT’s Roadway Structures crews monitor the width of the gap and flush the bridge to cool it down when needed.
