Drivers should expect occasional delays today (Friday, August 17) on the University Bridge. In addition to any openings for marine traffic, the bridge will be briefly closed to vehicular traffic about once an hour to allow a flusher truck to wet down the bridge. This procedure will take up to 10 minutes and will continue while temperatures remain elevated.
The purpose of flushing is to cool the structure and minimize expansion. If the two leaves of the bascule portion of the bridge expand too much, they could become inoperable and not able to be opened and closed for marine traffic.
Bicyclists and motorcylists should use caution due to the wet surface of the roadway.
