Crews working on the Seattle Department of Transportation’s (SDOT) NE Northgate Way and Fifth Avenue NE Intersection and Pedestrian Improvements Project will begin construction of a new NE Northgate Way landscaped median this Saturday. This work will continue for approximately two weeks and requires restricting travel to one lane as follows:
- Westbound NE Northgate Way from Third to Fifth avenues NE
The westbound restriction will remain in place intermittently until project completion, scheduled before Thanksgiving. Throughout the project traffic has been intermittently reduced to one lane as follows:
- Eastbound NE Northgate Way from Third to Fifth avenues NE
- Southbound Fifth Avenue NE from NE Northgate Way to just south of Key Bank
Eastbound NE Northgate Way will remain one lane for the duration of the project, to allow upcoming improvements to be completed. Also on Saturday, August 4, utility crews will relocate wires, reducing travel to one lane for the day, beginning at 7 a.m. as follows:
- Northbound Fifth Avenue NE just south of NE Northgate Way
Construction is expected to begin on the southeast corner of the intersection in mid-August. There, crews will add a second left-hand turn lane for westbound traffic on NE Northgate Way turning southbound onto Fifth Avenue NE, and will extend the right-hand turn lane for northbound traffic on Fifth Avenue turning eastbound onto NE Northgate Way.
Normal work hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. During construction, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers are advised to use caution and expect frequent delays and increased congestion.
