The Seattle Department of Transportation is coordinating road construction in several locations of the city of Seattle this weekend, from Friday evening, July 6 to Monday morning, July 9. The goal is to accomplish as much as possible during the weekend when traffic volumes are lighter. Please allow extra time when planning trips in the following areas:
I-5 Mercer ramps:
SDOT will close the I-5 on- and off-ramps to and from Mercer Street, including the Express Lane ramps, beginning 11 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday. Detours will be posted around the closures. The northbound on-ramp from University Street to I-5 will also be closed at the same time. These closures are required for work on the Mercer Street East improvements. See the project Web site at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/ppmp_mercer.htm for additional details regarding alternate routes.
Spokane Street Viaduct, I-5 to West Seattle Bridge, Westbound:
The westbound lanes of the Spokane Street Viaduct (the raised roadway that connects the West Seattle high-level bridge with I-5) will be closed from 10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday. The southbound SR99 off-ramp to West Seattle will remain open, providing an opportunity to avoid the closure detour. See the project Web site at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/spokanestreet.htm for additional details regarding alternate routes.
Aurora Avenue North and North 85th Street:
SDOT will close the intersection of Aurora Avenue North and N 85th Street from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday for street improvements as part of the N/NW 85th Street paving project. All lanes on Aurora will be closed at the intersection. One westbound lane on N 85th Street will remain open, and the current eastbound closure on N 85th Street between Greenwood Avenue N and Aurora Avenue North will remain in effect. Detour routes will be clearly posted. See the project Web site at http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/pave_85th.htm for additional details regarding alternate routes.
In addition to construction work, there are several special events for this weekend that will also impact traffic. On Saturday, the Seafair Pirates will land at Alki in West Seattle around the noon hour. Also on Saturday, there will be a parade and festival in Wallingford, a “zombie walk” in Fremont, and wrestling event in South Park. On Sunday a Sounders game starts at 7 p.m. at Centurylink Field. A traffic advisory with more information about special events will be posted on SDOT’s On the Move blog at http://onthemove.seattle.gov/2012/07/03/fun-abounds-on-the-fourth/
