The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) began construction Monday on the NE Northgate Way and Fifth Avenue NE Intersection and Pedestrian Improvements Project. The project will wrap up in four months, ahead of the holiday shopping season. Now through mid-August crews will work in the southwest corner of the intersection, requiring lane and sidewalk closures on:
- Eastbound NE Northgate Way from Third to Fifth avenues NE
- Southbound Fifth Avenue NE from NE Northgate Way to just south of Key Bank
Normal work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with possible weekend work 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Any intermittent stops of traffic will cease at 3 p.m. on weekdays to reduce impacts on the afternoon commute.
On Thursday, July 5, crews will remove approximately six trees along Northgate Way, west of Fifth Avenue NE to make room for road and sidewalk improvements. The following week, crews will remove trees on Fifth Avenue just south of NE Northgate Way. For each tree removed for this project, the City will plant two in the immediate neighborhood.
Local access will be maintained throughout construction, with advanced notification for temporary driveway impacts. During construction, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers are advised to use caution and expect frequent delays and increased congestion.
For more information visit www.seattle.gov/transportation/northgateintersection.htm or call the construction hotline at 206-462-6348. Calls to the Hotline will receive a response within one business day.
PLEASE NOTE: Puget Sound Energy project work continues in the area, reducing travel to one lane in each direction on NE Northgate Way. Contact customercare@pse.com or 1-888-225-5773 with concerns.
