The Seattle Department of Transportation will close the Aurora Avenue N and N 85th Street intersection next weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, July 6 untilĀ 6 a.m. Monday, July 9. The closure is needed to reconstruct the roadway and install stormwater pipes as part of the N/NW 85th Street Paving Project. This work was originally planned for late-June and was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Lanes will begin closing at 8 p.m. on Friday, and all lanes will be closed by 10 p.m. During the closure, Aurora Avenue N traffic will be detoured from the north at N 105th Street and from the south at Green Lake Way N, with local access provided to N 85th Street. One westbound lane on N 85th Street will be maintained through the intersection during this work. The eastbound closure on N 85th Street between Greenwood Avenue N and Aurora Avenue N will remain in effect with eastbound traffic detoured to N 80th Street.
Drivers can expect significant delays and increased congestion in the area over the weekend. Detour routes to I-5 and 15th Ave NW/Holman Road will be clearly posted, and SDOT asks drivers to follow signed detour routes to avoid cutting through neighborhood streets. Some Metro bus routes will be affected by this work and riders should look for Rider Alert notices at the bus stops, see reroute information on Metro Online www.kingcounty.gov/metro or call (206) 553-3000.
Additional weekend closures of the Aurora Avenue N and N 85th Street intersection will be required to complete this work. These dates have not yet been scheduled, but are anticipated in mid-summer.
This project is funded by the 2006 Bridging the Gap levy passed by voters, and makes much-needed repairs to the two-mile stretch of N/NW 85th Street between 15th Avenue NW and I-5, and Greenwood Avenue N. The entire project is anticipated to be complete in the fall.
