The contractor working for the Seattle Department of Transportation on the Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project continues to move towards project completion, now anticipated for late summer. As early as this coming Thursday morning, April 12, all eastbound traffic will be temporarily moved off of the old viaduct structure and onto the new viaduct structure, joining the two lanes of westbound traffic. It is necessary to move traffic off of the old structure so that its bridge deck can be repaired and resurfaced before eastbound traffic is returned to it.
The Fourth Avenue S off-ramp will be closed during this phase of construction; however, the First Ave S off-ramp will remain open. Additionally, access to the upper Spokane Viaduct and the I-5 ramps from the Harbor Island on-ramp will be closed. The on-ramp will only provide access to northbound SR99 during this phase of work.

Now Through Friday, May 4
- There will be a 24/7 round-the-clock partial intersection closure at East Marginal Way S and S Spokane Street for paving. The northern half of the intersection will be will be closed for the first two weeks, during which time northbound traffic will be routed underneath the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Northbound traffic wishing to turn west at S Spokane Street will be U-turned further north to allow access to Harbor Island and/or West Seattle. (Eastbound lower S Spokane Street will remain open.) Southbound traffic will take a short detour to the west before returning to southbound East Marginal Way S.
The following two weeks, northbound traffic will be restored while the rest of the intersection is paved. Northbound to westbound turns will continue to be detoured.
Monday, April 9
- The westbound off-ramp to Harbor Island from the Spokane Street Viaduct will be closed from 9 p.m. Monday, April 9 until 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. Traffic will be detoured via the Delridge Way Exit and the low level Spokane Bridge to Harbor Island.
- Westbound traffic on lower Spokane Street, west of East Marginal Way S will be closed overnight from 9 p.m. on Monday, April 9 until 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. The southbound to westbound turn will be closed, including access to the Lower Spokane Swing Bridge. Southbound E Marginal Way S will also be closed to through traffic. Traffic wishing to reach West Seattle will be detoured at S Hanford St via First Avenue S to the First Avenue S Bridge.
Monday, April 9 – Thursday, April 12
- The eastbound travel lanes of the Spokane Street Viaduct will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. Monday, April 9 until 5 a.m. the following morning. The Fourth Avenue off-ramp will also be closed, however, the First Avenue S off-ramp will remain open during these closures. Motorists wishing to reach I-5 should take the First Avenue S off-ramp and proceed east on the lower Spokane St roadway to the I-5 onramps.
