The contractor working to widen the Spokane Street Viaduct will close both Sixth Avenue S at S Spokane Street and East Marginal Way S at S Spokane Street overnight this coming Thursday evening, December 8, and a number of nights next week.
Sixth Avenue S at S Spokane Street will be closed Thursday, December 8, and on Monday and Tuesday, December 12 and 13. Work will begin at 9 p.m. each night, except on December 12, when work will commence at 11 p.m. (to accommodate departing stadium traffic). The roadway reopens in each instance at 5 a.m. the next morning. These closures are needed to remove the forms and temporary support structures that were used to construct the new roadway deck. Please note that northbound traffic on Sixth Avenue S approaching Spokane from the south will continue to have access to the I-5 on-ramps at Sixth and Spokane throughout the closures.
Northbound East Marginal Way at S Spokane Street will be closed Thursday, December 8, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning. Both northbound and southbound East Marginal Way at S Spokane Street will be closed on Monday, December 12, Wednesday, December 14, and Thursday, December 15th from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
On Tuesday, December 13, both northbound and southbound traffic on East Marginal Way at S Spokane Street will be closed, as will the southbound to westbound turn to the West Seattle Swing Bridge. The road will be closed from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. Motorists who normally use this route to reach West Seattle will be detoured to the First Avenue S Bridge.
The East Marginal Way closures are necessary to set steel girders over the roadway and to then attach the form work required to complete the roadway deck above.
