Work will begin on changes to Howell Street in downtown Seattle this weekend, weather permitting, to provide a bus-only lane requested by Metro Transit. The goal is to improve the ability of Metro, Community Transit and Pierce Transit buses to get through this congested area during afternoon rush periods.
There will be temporary lane closures on Howell Street on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. to allow crews to work on pavement markings, signs, and traffic signals. At least one lane will remain open at all times. Additional work will take place the following weekend.
The new lane configuration on Howell Street will consist of four eastbound lanes from Ninth Avenue to Yale Street with one lane for buses only from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays starting Monday, May 16. Howell Street currently has three eastbound lanes, one westbound lane, and no bus-only lanes. Bicyclists will continue to share a lane with general-purpose traffic.
