Safeco and Qwest Fields Will be Hopping this Weekend
Tomorrow, Friday, the Seattle Mariners will come out swinging – their bats that is – as they take on the Cleveland Indians for the Season Opener. A crowd of 45,000 is expected to turn out for the game at Safeco Field which starts at 7:10 p.m. On Saturday, the Mariners and Indians will play at 6:10 p.m. and on Sunday they’ll toss out the first ball at 1:10 p.m. Saturday’s game will draw 35,000 while another 25,000 will be attending Sunday’s game.
Also, earlier on Saturday, the Seattle Sounders will kick off their match against the Chicago Fire at 1 p.m. on Qwest Field. An estimated 34,000 soccer fans will be on hand to cheer on the Sounders.
Motorists can expect congestion in the area around the stadiums before and after the games. Please keep in mind that a good alternate to First Avenue S is Fourth Avenue S which now has two travel lanes open in each direction – north and southbound.
Instead of driving, why not ride public transit to the games. Nearly all King County Metro and Sound Transit service to downtown Seattle is within easy walking distance of Safeco and Qwest Fields. Please be aware that due to construction, there’s no Metro bus service on First Avenue S in either direction between S Royal Brougham Way and S Jackson Street. Check the regional trip planner at www.kingcounty.gov/tripplanner or call (206) 553-3000 to plan your travels.
