Holiday revelers are likely to be out in force Friday night and throughout the weekend, celebrating the New Year by attending concerts, theatre, sporting events, and parties. The Seattle Department of Transportation urges you to be a safe traveler by being extra cautious, looking out for others who may be distracted–whether driving or walking. Why not start the New Year off by giving your car and the environment a break and taking the Sounder commuter train, Link light rail, Metro Transit, the Street car, a car pool, your bicycle, or if feasible, walking to your destination.
Those who choose to drive should expect heavy traffic associated with the following events that will be attracting large crowds:
Friday, December 31
New Year’s at the Needle: Fireworks at 12 midnight – 12:07 a.m.
Area surrounding the base of the Space Needle
Streets closed at 11:30 p.m. – approximately 12:15 a.m.: Fifth Avenue N between Mercer and Broad streets, and Broad Street between Fifth Avenue N and Denny Way.
Sunday, January 2
Seahawks versus Saint Louis Rams: 5:20 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Final regular season game
Plan on heavy traffic on I-5, I-90 and SR 99 approaching the SODO area and on arterials surrounding the stadium.
