The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) has completed installing the conduit required to upgrade railroad crossing gates on Vine Street and on Wall Street, both at Alaskan Way. In several weeks additional work will occur at these locations to install detection and the gates. There will also be work on Broad Street, but it is not yet scheduled.
The Seattle Department of Transportation contracted with BNSF for this work to meet federal requirements for retaining the Waterfront “Quiet Zone” in which the use of train horns is limited to emergencies only. The whistle ban applies to the rail crossings at Broad, Clay, Vine and Wall streets.
