Motorists should plan on delays through the construction zone
In preparation for the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement, the Washington State Department of Transportation is installing a large electrical vault on Alaskan Way S at S Atlantic Street. During the construction work, the intersection of Alaskan Way S and S Atlantic Street is closed to north and southbound traffic along Alaskan Way in this area, until Monday, December 21.
The resulting detour route around this closure has added considerable truck traffic on First Avenue S, resulting in significant congestion during much of the day. Uniformed police officers have been stationed at the most impacted intersections in an attempt to facilitate the movement of traffic.
Nevertheless, motorists driving on S Alaskan Way and First Avenue S between S King Street and S Holgate Street are likely to encounter traffic backups, and are encouraged to seek alternate routes on Fourth and Sixth Avenues S, or Airport Way South to avoid the bottleneck.
