While other downtown paving jobs are winding down, work on two blocks of Broad Street from Elliott Avenue to First Avenue will begin Thursday, September 17, to be finished by mid October. Broad Street is a major arterial that connects the downtown central waterfront with the Seattle Center and the Mercer Corridor.
The existing surface of Broad Street will be ground off during the nights of Thursday and Friday. Broad Street will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Alaskan Way to Second Avenue from as early as 6 p.m. each night until 6 a.m. the following morning.
During grinding, there will be periodic cross street and driveway interruptions. Uniformed police officers and flaggers will offer assistance and keep vehicles moving.
Once grinding is complete, the contractor will make repairs to the concrete and brick base pavement beneath the asphalt and install new, or retrofit existing, curb ramps to conform to current accessibility standards. Final paving is scheduled for mid-October.
