SDOT’s contractor has completed a tremendous amount of paving on downtown streets this summer. Although the summer is ending, there should still be enough good weather to accomplish more paving this year, while we enjoy what has already been completed. SDOT’s contractor plans to begin work on Fourth Avenue next week, and has just begun working on two blocks of Broad Street.

Fourth Avenue, South Jackson Street to Olive Way—SDOT’s contractor plans to begin work on Fourth Avenue from Jackson to James streets on the week of September 28. The entire project, which will extend into next summer, includes reconstructing most of Fourth Avenue between S Jackson and Seneca and replacing selected concrete panels on Fourth Avenue between Seneca and Olive. More detailed information about the first stage of this work will be available next week.

Stewart Street—The final section of Stewart Street is scheduled for asphalt paving on the night of Thursday, September 24. The contractor may start as early as 6 p.m. on Thursday night, and work until 6 a.m. Friday morning. During paving, there will be periodic cross street and driveway interruptions. Police officers and flaggers will assist traffic.

Second Avenue Extension—Next week (the week of September 21), Second Avenue Extension will be reduced to one lane of traffic. The west side of the intersection with South Washington Street will be closed. Work will include several hours of noisy saw cutting, and this could be both during the day and at night. The good news is that this is the final stretch of paving work on the Second Avenue project.
.
Marion Street—Marion Street will be down to one lane next week (the week of September 21) between Western and Sixth avenues, with parking restrictions, as the contractor continues paving this street.

Broad Street—Work on two blocks of Broad Street from Elliott Avenue to First Avenue began yesterday, September 17, with grinding off the old asphalt surface. Next week the contractor will begin repairs to the concrete and brick base pavement beneath the asphalt. Final paving is scheduled for mid-October.

Final paving on First Avenue South will take place at night (weather permitting) next week. The paving and striping of First Avenue between South Stacy and Horton streets will likely take four nights to complete and is scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, September 8 to September 11.

First Avenue South will be closed to traffic in both directions each night at 9 p.m. and will be reopened no later than 6 a.m. the following morning. The cross streets (South Stacy, Lander, Forest, Hanford and Horton Streets) will also be closed to thru traffic at First Avenue during these times.

Both north- and south-bound traffic will be detoured around First Avenue South between South Holgate and Horton streets using Fourth Avenue South.

Local access will be allowed along First Avenue South north and south of the construction zone – between Holgate and Stacy and between Horton and Spokane- but no traffic will be allowed between Stacy and Horton.

Drivers may choose to use East Marginal Way South as an alternate route.

Uniformed patrol officers will be stationed at each intersection along First Avenue South during the paving operations to handle any difficulties.

Some relatively minor construction work will need to be finished after the final paving is done and the street reopened to traffic. These activities may occasionally require the temporary closure of the curbside traffic lane in places, but should not interfere with either the driving lanes or the center turn lane. And as soon as this work is finished, likely within the week after paving is completed, parking in the curbside lane will be restored.

Work will start at North 105th and move northward. One lane of traffic in each direction will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
