2010 Safe Routes to School Mini-Grant Program Announced

The Seattle Department of Transportation announced today that applications for the Safe Routes to School Mini-Grant Program are currently being accepted in celebration of International Walk to School Month. Up to $1000 can be requested. The money must be used for programs that encourage more kids to ride their bikes or walk to school. All schools in Seattle are eligible to apply.

Groups also eligible for Mini-Grant Funds include PTA groups; Safe Routes to School teams; Walking School Bus groups; and other parent or teacher groups. Mini-grants can be used for a variety of items that support and encourage kids to walk or ride their bikes to school. Recent grants have supported new equipment for the Student Safety Patrol at Brighton Elementary; a bike commuter class at Ballard High School; walking school bus incentives at Blaine K-8; and new bike racks at Holy Rosary School.

Applications will be accepted until October 30, 2009 and the recipients will be notified by November 13, 2009.

Weekend Work Scheduled for the West Seattle Bridge

Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, The Seattle Department of Transportation will be removing and replacing markings in the bus lane eastbound on the West Seattle Bridge from the Avalon Way on-ramp, adjacent to the old steel mill, to the First Avenue S off-ramp, just past the SR99 exit. In conjunction with the pavement marking work, the crews will also be installing signs.

The work will be carried out between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Motorists should use caution and be watchful for buses needing to pull out of the bus lane in the work zone.

Lane Closure on the West Seattle Bridge, Monday, Oct 19

SDOT crews will close the westbound, left hand lane on the West Seattle Bridge on Monday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This closure will allow the Seattle Fire Department to check the fire suppression system.

W Marginal Way SW Down to One Lane Today, Oct 13

West Marginal Way Southwest is restricted to one lane shared by both north and southbound traffic at South Dakota Street where a truck hit a large power pole earlier today. Seattle City Light crews are replacing the pole, expected to continue into the afternoon. Drivers should expect delays and are advised to avoid the area if possible, just south of Southwest Spokane Street. Drivers headed for areas to the south of SW Dakota Street may take the First Avenue South Bridge and approach West Marginal Way SW from the south. Drivers headed for areas north of SW Dakota Street such as the Port of Seattle’s Terminal 5, are advised to use the Spokane Street Bridge.

SDOT to Pave Beach Drive SW on Sun, Oct 18

SDOT paving crews have been preparing to pave a block on Beach Drive SW, from SW Oregon Street to SW Snoqualmie Street. They now plan to pave on Sunday, October 18, if the weather cooperates. All traffic will share one lane, assisted by a traffic flagger.

The paving is needed to restore the street surface.

Construction on Beach Drive SW Oct 12-Oct 30

SDOT will rebuild the west side of the roadway and repair the sidewalk in the 6500 block of Beach Drive Southwest starting Monday, October 12. The road will be reduced to one lane for approximately three weeks with a flagger to guide traffic during the day.

Railroad Crossing Repairs Begin Saturday

Starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad will be making repairs to the railroad crossing at S Horton Street and S Colorado Avenue. During the anticipated five-day work schedule, S Horton Street will be closed from S Colorado Avenue to E Marginal Way S. Traffic travelling east or west on S Horton Street will be detoured one block north to S Hanford Street. The roadway should reopen to traffic by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14.

Southbound Battery Street Tunnel Closed Saturday Night

This coming weekend, on October 10 – 11, Seattle Department of Transportation and Washington State Department of Transportation crews will work overnight on the Battery Street Tunnel fire suppression system. In order to accomplish the maintenance work, the southbound tunnel must be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

During the closure, traffic heading southbound on SR99/Aurora Avenue N will be detoured just before the tunnel onto the Denny Street exit; from Denny, traffic will be directed west on Wall Street onto Elliott Avenue and then back onto SR 99/ the Alaskan Way Viaduct via the southbound Elliott Avenue on ramp. Motorists should allow for the additional time to follow the detour. The tunnel northbound will remain open to traffic.

Work on West Seattle Bridge, Oct 10

SDOT crews plan to work on the West Seattle Bridge at the Harbor Avenue exit on Saturday, October 10 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. replacing a crash cushion. They will be working on the shoulder and will merge traffic around the work site.

Lane Closure on Fauntleroy Expressway Oct 7-9, Oct 12-14

SDOT Crews plan to work on the Fauntleroy Expressway from Wednesday to Friday Oct 7 to 9, and Monday to Wednesday, Oct 12 to 14, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. They will make deck repairs, closing one lane at a time. (This work will be rescheduled if the weather is not favorable.)
