			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Seattle Department of Transportation announced today that applications for the Safe Routes to School Mini-Grant Program are currently being accepted in celebration of International Walk to School Month.  Up to $1000 can be requested.  The money must be used for programs that encourage more kids to ride their bikes or walk to school.  All schools in Seattle are eligible to apply. </p>
<p>Groups also eligible for Mini-Grant Funds include PTA groups; Safe Routes to School teams; Walking School Bus groups; and other parent or teacher groups.  Mini-grants can be used for a variety of items that support and encourage kids to walk or ride their bikes to school.  Recent grants have supported new equipment for the Student Safety Patrol at Brighton Elementary; a bike commuter class at Ballard High School; walking school bus incentives at Blaine K-8; and new bike racks at Holy Rosary School. </p>
<p>Applications will be accepted until October 30, 2009 and the recipients will be notified by November 13, 2009.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: left;">This is coming weekend, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will completely repave the intersection at First Avenue and Columbia Street, along with approximately 100 feet of Columbia Street heading east. The project, added to the 2009 paving program this fall, is expected to wrap up in less than two days time. Work will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 9, with paving scheduled to be complete by Saturday night, October 10. Striping and some touch up work will follow, with the roadway reopened by 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 11.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">To complete this work in the quick turn-around of less than 48 hours, First Avenue will be closed between Marion Street and Cherry Street; Columbia Street will be closed at Second Avenue.  The Columbia Street on-ramp to the Alaskan Way Viaduct southbound will be closed from 6:30 p.m. on Friday, and reopen no later than 11 a.m. on Sunday.  In accordance with noise restrictions, there will be no jack-hammering after 10 p.m.</p>

The department encourages motorists try something positive for the environment and their budgets by heading to the events via Sounder, Link Rail, bus, cycling or, if appropriate, walking.  </p>

<p>March for Youth: March begins at 3 p.m. from two separate points; one begins at Martin Luther King, Jr. Way South and South Walker Street. The other begins at 23rd Avenue South and South Jackson Street. They will meet at Sam Smith Park where there will be a rally from approximately 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. An estimated 500 participants are expected. </p>
<p>Summer Sundays on Pike Place:  10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Streets surrounding Pike Place Market may be congested; 1,000 participants expected.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>SEATTLE – The coming weekend, Friday through Sunday, July 31 &#8211; August 2, offers up a wide variety of entertainment including three parades, festivals, hydroplane races and fireworks. Motorists should count on heavy traffic surrounding event sites and on parking at a distance and walking to the activities. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) encourages event-goers to consider other modes of travel such as walking, cycling or taking the bus.</p>
<p>The Chevrolet (Hydroplane) Cup at Seafair and KeyBank Air Show presented by Boeing (including concert and fireworks) will make it easier for participants to leave the car at home by providing secure bike corrals on site and shuttle buses from the Boeing lot in Renton and the Eastgate Park and Ride to the Genessee Park entrance gate.  There will also be a shuttle from the Link Rail Othello Station at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Othello Street or people can walk the mile to the park from the Link Rail Columbia City Station at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Edmunds Street.  Information on Seafair shuttles is available at <a href="http://www.seafair.com/events/hydro/getthere.asp">www.seafair.com/events/hydro/getthere.asp</a> . 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: left;">SEATTLE –The coming weekend is chock-full of Seafair and summer activities taking place throughout Seattle from Thursday afternoon through Sunday, evening, July 16 – 19.   There are many events celebrating Seattle’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity.  In addition, crowds of 50,000 to 70,000 people are expected to turn out for the launch of the newly completed Tukwila to Seattle Sound Transit Light Rail, the Seattle Sounders match against England’s Chelsea Football Club, and the Bite of Seattle.</p>
<p>Motorists should expect to encounter heavy traffic around event sites and plan to park at a distance and walk.  Instead of driving alone, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) encourages event-goers to consider alternate modes of travel such as walking, cycling, carpooling, or taking the bus – by doing so, they’ll avoid frustration, save themselves money, and reduce their carbon footprint!<br />

Buses will serve all the stops near tunnel entrances that are used when the tunnel is closed providing good connections between buses and light rail in the downtown core. This will add to the regular summer Bicycle Sunday closure of Lake Washington Boulevard S from Seward Park to Lake Park Drive S, and including a closure of Lake Washington Boulevard S from Lake Park Drive S to Day Street near I-90. Swim, bike and run participants gather along Lake Washington Boulevard at Seward and Ferdinand Park. The course heads north on Lake Washington Boulevard and Lakeside, west on S Day Street, up the bike path to the I-90 express lanes, across the bridge and u-turn back across the bridge and bike path to south on 36<sup>th</sup> Avenue S and returns to  Seward Park for a swim in Lake Washington.<br />
