An event-full weekend ahead!


It’s that time of year when weekend fun abounds. The coming  days, May 16 – 18, offer activities for all ages in locations throughout Seattle ranging from professional sports and fund- raising races to ethnic cultural events and annual street celebrations. For details about these and many other events, please see the following schedule.

The Seattle Department of Transportation encourages event-goers to consider joining the effort to reduce air pollution by leaving the car at home and trying one of the many alternate forms of transportation available – Metro Transit, the Sounder, Link light rail, West Seattle Water Taxi, carpool, bicycle, or even walk – if feasible.

Friday, May 16
Seattle Storm vs. Los Angeles Sparks:  7 – 9:30 p.m.
Key Arena, Seattle Center
5,000 attending
Expect congestion on the west side of the Seattle Center.

Tales of Hoffman Seattle Opera:  7:30 – 11 p.m.
McCaw Hall, Seattle Center
2,900 attending
Expect congestion on Mercer Street.

Saturday, May 17
45th Annual University District Street Fair: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
25,000 expected
Streets closed from 2:30 a.m. Saturday – 2:30 a.m. Monday:  University Way NE between NE 50th Street and NE Campus Parkway; NE 47th Street, NE 43rd Street, NE 42nd Street, and NE 41st Street between 15th Avenue NE and Brooklyn Avenue NE.

Western Governors University Graduation Ceremony
:  10 a. m. – 12 Noon
McCaw Hall, Seattle Center
2,900 attending
Expect congestion on Mercer Street before and after the ceremony.

A glimpse of China – Art and Culture Festival:  11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Armory Stage/Dance Floor, Seattle Center
1,000 attending
Expect heavier traffic on streets surrounding the Seattle Center.

Seattle Norwegian 17th of May Parade:
 6 p.m.
Parade staging on streets around Adams Elementary School (26th Avenue NW and NW 62nd Street) from 3 – 7 p.m.
4,500 attending
Parade route closed from the 5:30 – 9 p.m.
Parade route: starts at 24th Avenue NW and  NW 62nd Street; south on 24th to NW Market Street; east on Market to 22nd Ave. NW; south on 22nd to Ballard Ave. NW; disperse north and south on Ballard Ave. NW; parade staging will be on streets around Adams Elementary School (26th NW & NW 62nd) beginning at 4 p.m.  http://www.17thofmay.org/parade.html

Sunday, May 18:
Nordstrom Beat the Bridge 8K Run & Walk:  Run: 8:30
Staging at Montlake Boulevard and Pacific Street NE
11,000 participants
Streets closed from 7:30 – 11 a.m.: Montlake Boulevard NE between NE 44th Street and NE Pacific Street for staging and all streets along the run route.
8K run route: starts at Montlake Boulevard NE and NE Pacific Street; heads south on Montlake across the Montlake Bridge to E Roanoke Street; west on Roanoke to W Montlake Place E; south on W Montlake to 19th Avenue E; south on 19th to E Lynn Street; west on Lynn to Boyer Avenue E; northwest on Boyer to Fuhrman Avenue E; northwest on Fuhrman to the University Bridge – crossing  north on the bridge to NE Campus Parkway; east on Campus Parkway to Brooklyn Avenue NE; south on Brooklyn to NE Pacific Street; east on Pacific to NE Pacific Place; east on Pacific Place to Montlake Boulevard NE; north on Montlake to NE 44th Street; makes a U-turn and finishes in Husky Stadium. Note: The University Bridge will go up at approximately 8:50 a.m. and stay up for approximately five minutes.
Drivers will encounter a rolling slowdown on the race route as participants move along; prepare for delays and plan accordingly.

West Seattle 5K Run and Walk:

Alki Avenue
1,600 participants
Run and walk route: starts on Alki Avenue SW at 60th Avenue SW; moves  east on Alki to Anchor Park (1100 Alki Avenue SW), makes a u-turn and returns to the start of the race.

 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

1,500 attending
Streets closed from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.: Alki Avenue SW between 63rd Avenue SW and 56th Avenue SW.
The West Seattle Water Taxi will continue to operate; the Don Armeni Boat Ramp will be open.
