Emergency utility repairs on South Main Street, estimated Jan. 2-16
Beginning as early as the week of January 2, westbound traffic on S. Main Street will be closed from First Ave. S. to Occidental Ave. S. during working hours. Utility work is anticipated to take up to two weeks, and then additional time may be required to restore the historic cobblestone surface.
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) needs to install a new drainage pipe and connect it to an existing combined sewer line adjacent to the Grand Central Building in the Pioneer Square district. Crews will install an 8-inch outfall pipe from the existing catch basin in the south end of the alley between 1st Ave. S. and Occidental Ave. S. and to connect it to the existing combined sewer line under S. Main St. A temporary pump is currently being used to prevent potentially damaging ponding at that location during heavy rains.
